John Mannering, alias Le Baron, est un gentleman-cambrioleur mondain.

Après être rentré en Angleterre après la première guerre mondiale, John Mannering a perdu toute sa fortune après avoir joué aux courses, et couvert de cadeaux ses multiples conquêtes féminines.

Il devint alors cambrioleur par nécessité afin de gagner de l'argent rapidement.

Grand, brun, les yeux noisette, joueur de cricket et cavalier émérite roulant en Aston-Martin, c'est en prenant une voix rauque et en se parant d'un imperméable et d'un mouchoir sur le visage (ou d'un masque d'étoffe souple muni de deux fentes) que John Mannering devient ainsi le Baron, voleur ne s'attaquant qu'aux riches sans les tuer.

Amoureux de Lorna, la fille de ses premières victimes, Lord et Lady Fauntley, il est traqué par l'inspecteur William Bristow, de Scotland Yard, et par son adjoint le sergent Jacob Tring, qui sont persuadés que John Mannering et Le Baron ne font qu'un.
